our
mission

AMU exists to make the path to medicine and biomedical science more accessible, supported, and attainable.

We empower under-resourced and underrepresented students through intentional mentorship, individualized guidance, professional development, and community. By connecting students with people, resources, and opportunities that may otherwise be difficult to access, we help them navigate their journeys with greater confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Our mission is not simply to help students enter academic medicine, but to equip them to thrive within it and help shape its future.

our

values

At IAMU, we believe potential is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Our work is grounded in the belief that a student's circumstances, resources, or access to professional networks should not determine how far they can go.

We value access, mentorship, belonging, resilience, growth, and service. We meet students where they are, recognize the strengths and experiences they already carry, and provide sustained support as they pursue who they are becoming.

Most importantly, we believe in lifting as we climb, building a community in which today's students become tomorrow's physicians, scientists, mentors, and leaders who create opportunities for those coming after them.

Who We Serve

IAMU supports under-resourced and underrepresented students pursuing careers in medicine and biomedical science, particularly those with limited access to mentorship, advising, professional networks, and opportunities. We meet students where they are and help them build the support, confidence, and connections needed to move forward.

IAMU's mentorship program has been instrumental in my professional and personal development. My mentor is incredibly invested in my  journey, going above and beyond with constant check-ins, providing valuable advice, and identifying key resources to further my career goals. My experience has been invaluable. On days where I feel low, I can always count on my mentor to share their wisdom and lift me up with their encouraging words. I am immensely grateful to be connected with this program.

I can’t say enough about the amazing work that IAMU does to help boost representation in medicine and science. Their mentors are like family, offering invaluable support in everything from personal statements to life advice. IAMU has genuinely changed my life and the lives of so many others, inspiring us to pursue our dreams.

IAMU has been tremendously influential in my medical journey. As a student who did not enter college with a science major and decided to pursue medicine halfway through it was crucial for me to have constant support and guidance. IAMU provides me with in-depth knowledge and exposure to the world of medicine that I would not have received anywhere else. I can confidently say without them involved in my journey I would not be where I am today. I hope to one day be part of IAMU as a mentor to have a role in providing guidance to future physicians.

As a budding physician-scientist, the mentorship and support I received from IAMU over the past two years have positively shaped my growth and trajectory. Their guidance has been invaluable throughout my premedical studies and post baccalaureate research training. Through IAMU, I received consistent support during rigorous MCAT preparation, constructive feedback on my personal statement, and advice that ultimately led to my success in the medical school application cycle, with nine admissions offers. Their dedication to their mentees is truly unparalleled, and I am grateful for their ongoing support and mentorship.

Mentorship With Purpose

At IAMU, we mentor the person behind the pursuit.

Our approach goes beyond academics and career advice to recognize the experiences, challenges, relationships, and sense of belonging that shape how students navigate their journey. Through intentional connection, reflection, and individualized guidance, we help students grow with confidence, move with purpose, and see themselves as belonging in the spaces they aspire to enter.
